One day workshop will be held on 11th of September 2009, London proposes to advance thinking about diasporas in Europe. We intend to examine how these actors negotiate their multiple identities (e.g., national, ethnic, religious, gender, sexual etc) and their engagement and activism at various levels (local, national, regional, etc.)
There are many diaspora communities situated throughout Europe and yet
very little is known about how these diasporas engage with their local
communities, the state structures of the countries in which they reside,
and with broader EU bodies.
Questions we hope to address include:
- How diaspora organisations engage with the local and national state structures
- Whether and how they lobby the EU bodies on issues related to their homelands
- How they relate to other diasporic groups
- How states adjust to these cultural groupings
- What are the impacts of increased movement for politics and social policies
Workshop participants will be asked to prepare a paper (5000 word
maximum) which will be circulated to all participants beforehand in
order to facilitate the discussions at the workshop. If selected,
participants must be prepared to submit their final paper by
1 September 2009.
