WP35 Objectives

To capture variations between typical American and European approaches to social entrepreneurship (Europe: social economy, cooperativism, third sector, organizational criteria. USA: social purpose enterprises, private sector engagement, individual responsibility).

That means general associative activity that leads to entrepreneurship ie partnership (esp public/third sector) for projects and new social enterprise, groups of citizens associating for entrepreneurial reasons; and associations getting together for entrepreneurial activity. Thus it operates at different levels: individual and organisational. The term associative is used both in the sense of voluntary organisations and associative process (people getting together).

WP35 Description of work

  • Analysis and presentation of the recent academic debates on social entrepreneurship and a review of the American and European literature on social enterprises.
  • Modes of dissemination and forms of institutionalisation of social enterprise concept in the academic circles, new legislations, in social networks and main third sector umbrellas, in administrations and publics policies.
  • Identification of these various models of social entrepreneurship and social enterprise, on the basis of a grid of economic, social and democratic criteria.
