Professor John A. Hall made a name for himself within a historical-comparative field research. His 1985 book Powers and Liberties is highly acclaimed comparison of civilizations. His others books (for example, Coercion and Consent, The State, The State of the Nation) address the issues of international diplomacy, liberalism, civil society, the military role of the state, nationalism and the role of public intellectuals.
