The School for Social Studies at Masaryk University (Czech Republic)  provides university education studies in Sociology, Political Science, Social Policy and Social Work, Psychology, Media Studies and Journalism (BA, MA) Human Environmentalism, European Studies and International Relations at all levels from bachelors degree programmes  to postgraduate.  It hosts a Central European Studies Programme for Foreign Students, the Institute for Social Issues and the Centre for Personality and Ethnicity.

Ongoing or recent research projects include the long-term integrated faculty projects on Ethnicity, Minority and Marginalized Groups and Children, Youth, Family. National projects are in some cases supported by the EU, such as the research project on    The Improvement of Relationships Between Roma and Czech Community. Another national project addresses Social Exclusion and Social Inclusion in the Czech Society. The School for Social Studies also undertakes international projects such as the European Value Study.

About Tomáš Sirovátka

Tomáš Sirovátka is Professor of Social Policy and Social Work and Director of the Institute for Social Issues at the Faculty of Social Studies at Masaryk University in Brno (Czech Republic).   His research focuses on several aspects of the welfare state and policies for social inclusion of minority and marginalized groups. 

He is presently co-ordinator of the faculty project Ethnic, Minority and Marginalized Groups in the Czech Society. Tomáš Sirovátka was the National Expert of the project Social Policy in the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland (Institute for Human Sciences, Vienna). Moreover,  he has headed and co-ordinated projects that have been supported by ILO, UNDP and other agencies, including:  Czech Labour Market and Employment Strategy, Human Development of Roma in Central and Eastern Europe; Research project on The Unemployed and Social Policy,  Protection, Incentives, and Activities.

Tomáš Sirovátka has been the editor of Czech publications on minorities, marginalized groups and on social policy. He has written articles about and contributed to English language publications on the Czech welfare state and social security.
