The quality of life is a research topic within social and political research on the one hand but it is also an instrument of European social policy, an alternative to economistic ways of measuring policy outcomes and goals. In recent years cross-national research on citizen participation in associational and political life has taken a flight. In Europe, especially the European Social Survey (ESS) is an often used, large-scale survey on social and political participation, but several other surveys also try to capture participation in a similar way, such as Citizenship, Involvement and Democracy (CID), European Value Studies (EVS), Eurobarometer, and the International Social Survey Programme (ISSP).
